WOW! 1985 Comix

From

Uncanny

On my about page I mention comic books as one of my interests, but I haven't written anything substantial about comics yet. Here's the first tidbit, an eerily prescient quote from Uncanny X-Men #189, "Two Girls Out To Have Fun!", originally published in January 1985 and now available again in the (black-and-white) trade paperback Essential X-Men Vol. 5.
Amara (a forgettable New Mutants character) and Rachel Summers (who's from a dystopian future) visit New York City. We see a two-page wide shot of the Statue of Liberty (with scaffolding) and the island of Manhattan. The World Trade Center is right in the middle of the shot. An airliner flys overhead. After first mentioning Amara, the text reads:
IN A SENSE, HER COMPANION
RACHEL SUMMERS HASN'T
EVEN BEEN BORN YET. THE
NEW YORK SHE REMEMBERS IS
THAT OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

AND THE MEMORIES AREN'T PLEASANT.

IN HER MIND'S
EYE, SHE
SEES LOWER
MANHATTAN
BURNING.

THE TWIN TOWERS OF THE
WORLD TRADE CENTER LIE IN
RUINS. THOUSANDS ARE DEAD,
MANY MORE INJURED.

Welcome to the future. It's too bad I don't have a scanner, or I could show you the panel that depicts the WTC as a burning pile of rubble and a plume of smoke. But then, who needs the low-res comic book version when we've seen it for real.
