Greyhawk Collector's Guide

So. Many. Living. Greyhawk. Adventures! There, I had to get that out the way before writing anything else.

This is the twelfth in a series of Collector's Guides, and for this volume we turn our attention to Greyhawk. The World of Greyhawk is, in many ways, the original D&D setting. It is the place where Gary Gygax's own campaign took place out and (arguably) the first setting to get product support from TSR. Unfortunately, over the years, TSR's (and later WotC's) support for Greyhawk was rather erratic. With Gary's departure from TSR, the company focussed on the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance and released only a relatively small number of Greyhawk products. Those that were released often met with very mixed reactions from fans of the setting. (Castle Greyhawk, I'm looking at you!)

After WotC acquired TSR and decided to launch 3rd Edition, Greyhawk became the default D&D setting. Despite this, actual Greyhawk material produced during the 3rd Edition era was minimal (essentially the two versions of the Gazetteer and Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk). Instead Greyhawk references were scattered throughout the core line of 3rd Edition products, and in some cases, these were inconsistent with existing lore for the setting.

Of course, when I write that 3rd edition Greyhawk material was "minimal", I am referring only to official setting material. The material produced as part of the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign is not considered canonical, due to the lack of WotC oversight, but it was anything but minimal. More than two thousand adventures set in the World of Greyhawk were produced between the launch of the campaign at Gencon 2000 and its conclusion at Origins 2008. Compiling even a reasonably complete list of these adventures was a challenging task indeed, and I'm absolutely sure there are still adventures missing from this guide.

I decided not to include in this Guide the large number of generic D&D products over the years which contain only passing references to Greyhawk personalities and magic items. Since Greyhawk has provided D&D with proper names for many spells and magic items, a truly thorough inventory of products with Greyhawk references would include a huge number of additional products. Deciding what to include and what not to include was obviously a matter of opinion, but anyone who thinks I've left out something critical is very welcome to post some feedback.

Finally, I've included some very unofficial material that nonetheless has some links to Greyhawk. This includes Gary Gygax's Castle Zagyg series, some of Rob Kuntz's works, and Gary's Sagard series of novels. Feel free to ignore those parts of the Guide if you are only interesting in "true" Greyhawk products.

Special thanks to Greyhawk expert Allan Grohe ( @grodog ) for taking a look at some early drafts of this Guide, and for offering several suggestions and advice on Greyhawk lore.
